PHP have just released an emergency security update following the discovery of two critical remote code execution (RCE) vulnerabilities across a broad range of PHP versions. The two vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619) are being referred to collectively as PHP2Shell. Both of these vulnerabilities could allow an unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable server. This is one of the most serious PHP security releases we’ve seen in a while. devcenter.
If your business website, eCommerce store, SaaS platform, CRM, admin panel or web application is built in PHP (whether that’s WordPress, Laravel, CodeIgniter, Drupal or custom PHP) then this update is directly relevant to you. Even if your application code itself is secure an old version of PHP on the server can still leave you open to exploitation.
In this article you’ll find out what the PHP2Shell vulnerability is, which PHP versions are affected, what the latest secure PHP releases are, what the risk is to business websites and exactly what you need to do to secure your site. You’ll also find out how Infowind Technologies can assist you with your PHP upgrade, securing and modernisation.
What is the PHP2Shell vulnerability?
- CVE-2026-109618
- CVE-2026-109619
These can result in remote code execution under certain circumstances. In plain English an attacker could potentially execute malicious code on your web server without having to have valid login credentials. That’s why it’s been classified as a critical issue by the security agencies and hosting providers.
The flaws are memory corruption and stale global state issues. The potential impact is significant as an attacker could potentially gain access, drop malware, modify website files, steal business data and use the server as a platform for further attacks. The degree to which this could be exploited will be dependent on the server configuration and application environment.
The PHP security team released the fixes on 21st October 2026. All organisations using any version of PHP have been advised to upgrade to the latest patched release as soon as possible.
Which PHP versions are affected?
As per the security advisory PHP from 5.4 up to 8.5.11 is potentially vulnerable. That means it’s not just an issue with old sites, it’s an issue that could affect fairly modern sites too if they’re running on an unsupported or out of date PHP build.
The following versions have received official security patches:
| PHP Branch | Latest Secure Version |
| PHP 8.5 | PHP 8.5.12 |
| PHP 8.4 | PHP 8.4.27 |
| PHP 8.3 | PHP 8.3.36 |
| PHP 8.2 | PHP 8.2.35 |
These releases address the two critical vulnerabilities and should be deployed to production servers as a matter of urgency.
If your site is currently on PHP 7.4, PHP 7.x, PHP 5.6 or any other end of life version then simply applying a security patch may not be sufficient. You may in fact need a full PHP migration and application compatibility review prior to moving to a supported version.
Why This PHP Security Update Matters for Businesses
Lots of business owners think that security risks only really apply to large companies or high volume sites. In actual fact the attackers are often after the smaller and mid sized business sites as these are much easier to get at and may not have a security team of their own.
A compromised PHP website can create several business problems:
1. Data Theft
If your site is collecting customer data of any kind (customer details, payment information, login details, queries, business records etc) then a successful attack could expose that data. That in turn could lead to compliance issues, financial loss and reputational damage.
2. Malware and SEO Spam
Attackers will often inject malicious scripts, hidden links, spam pages or phishing content into a compromised site. This will damage your search rankings, result in Google security warnings and lead to a loss of organic traffic.
3. Website Downtime
A compromised server can crash, it can become slow and it can be taken offline by your host. For an eCommerce business even a few hours of downtime can equate to lost sales and abandoned carts.
4. Loss of Customer Trust
Customers expect you to protect their information. A security incident can do irreparable damage to your brand’s reputation, particularly if customer data is compromised.
5. Higher Recovery Costs
Fixing a hacked site is generally more expensive than simply preventing the attack. The fix can involve removing the malware, restoring the database, repairing the code, hardening the server, cleaning up the SEO and then ongoing security monitoring.
This is why the latest PHP security update absolutely has to be a priority rather than just some routine maintenance.
Latest PHP version: what should you use?
As of the October 2026 security release the latest patched version is 8.5.12. The best version for your site will be dependent on your application framework, plugins, libraries, server environment, and any custom code you have.
For most new PHP projects PHP 8.3 or 8.4 would be the way to go (they have the modern performance, the improved security and the good long term community support). For existing apps the right upgrade path will of course be determined by a compatibility review.
- A new Laravel application can generally be built on PHP 8.3 or PHP 8.4.
- A WordPress site should first check that its theme, plugins and core are all compatible with the PHP version you’re going to be using.
- A legacy custom PHP app will likely need some refactoring prior to upgrading from PHP 7.x to PHP 8.x.
- An enterprise app will likely require testing in a staging environment prior to being deployed into production.
Infowind Technologies will help you pick the right PHP version based on performance, security, compatibility and long term maintainability.
Immediate Steps to Protect Your PHP Website
If you manage your own website or server, take the following actions immediately:
1. Check Your Current PHP Version
Log into your hosting control panel / server dashboard / WordPress site health and check what PHP version is currently active. If you’re on PHP 8.5.11 or below your server could be at risk.
2. Update to a Patched PHP Release
- PHP 8.5.12
- PHP 8.4.27
- PHP 8.3.36
- PHP 8.2.35
Don’t put off this update at all, particularly if your site deals with customer data or takes payments online.
3. Take a Full Backup
Before doing any server side change at all take a complete backup of your website files, your database, your emails and your config files. That way if the update breaks things you can always restore the site.
4. Update WordPress, Plugins, and Themes
If you’re using WordPress then update WordPress core, your themes and your plugins. Outdated plugins are one of the most common ways in which attackers get in, even if you’ve got the PHP version updated.
5. Update Laravel and Composer Dependencies
For Laravel apps: update your composer dependencies, check the package vulnerabilities and make sure your Laravel version supports the PHP release you’ve selected.
6. Scan for Malware and Suspicious Files
After updating PHP, scan your site for unknown admin accounts, modified core files, odd cron jobs, suspicious database entries and injected scripts.
7. Test Website Functionality
Check all important user journeys after the update:
- Homepage and internal pages
- Contact forms
- Login and registration
- Checkout and payment flow
- Admin dashboard
- APIs and third-party integrations
- Email notifications
A PHP upgrade can occasionally break older plugins, libraries and custom functions so testing is a must.
When should you rebuild or revamp your website?
Updating PHP is the first thing you need to do, but that may not be sufficient if you’ve got an old site, a poorly maintained site or one that’s built on some piece of technology that’s long since been abandoned. A website revamp would be appropriate in those circumstances.
- Your site is running on PHP 5.x, 7.x or some other end of life version.
- Your CMS, plugins and frameworks have not been updated for a long time.
- Your site has slow load times or poor mobile performance.
- Your admin panel has no modern security controls.
- Your site has been hacked previously.
- Your codebase is very hard to maintain or scale.
- Your business needs better SEO, better conversion design and/or new features.
A modern rebuild can improve security, performance, user experience, search visibility and conversion rates. Rather than continually patching an old system you can go to a modern secure and scalable architecture using Laravel, WordPress or a bespoke PHP solution.

Final Thoughts
The October 2026 PHP security release is a major warning for any business using PHP technology. The PHP2Shell vulnerabilities allow for unauthenticated remote code execution and the affected versions span from PHP 5.4 up to and including 8.5.11.
The quickest and safest thing to do is to update your site to PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35 (depending on your website compatibility). Once you’ve done that you need to carry out a full security review, update all your plugins and dependencies, do a malware scan and test all the key site functions.
If your site is running an old version of PHP then don’t wait for it to become a security incident.
